Djokovic Extends Big Titles, Masters 1000 Leads With Cincinnati Win
The lead in the ‘Big Titles‘ race was extended by Novak Djokovic when he was rallied from a set and a break down and saved championship point against Carlos Alcaraz to win the Western & Southern Open. The ATP Masters 1000 titles record was extended to 39 by the Serbian. Just one month after a heartbreaking loss in the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic was bounced back to earn revenge against the Spaniard in the Cincinnati final. The Spaniard was defeated in the Cincinnati final, and Djokovic now owns 68 ‘Big Titles’, which encompass Grand Slam championships, trophies at the Nitto ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals. One ‘Big Title’ has been won by Djokovic for every 3.2 events played (68/215 Rafael Nadal, his closest competitor, is nine championships behind him (59, 3.5). In the 4.4 competitions he participated in prior to his retirement at the Laver Cup, Roger Federer won one Big Title (54/240). The only player who has won all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments is the 36-year-old Djokovic. With his victory in Cincinnati, Djokovic has won at least three of the Masters 1000 tournaments, with the exception of Monte-Carlo, where he has won twice. Now, Djokovic is three Masters 1000 titles clear of Nadal (36). Since the introduction of the series in 1990, they are the only two players who have claimed at least 30 crowns at the elite level. In Masters 1000 competitions, Djokovic has a 394-86 record and has triumphed at least once in 12 of the last 13 seasons.
