 Baba Amte, born Murlidhar Devidas Amte on December 26, 1914, in Hinganghat, Maharashtra, was a beacon of humanitarianism rooted in a family with a strong social consciousness. His father, Devidas Amte, a respected British government official, and his spiritually inclined mother, Laxmibai Amte, cultivated an environment that profoundly influenced Baba Amte’s values and commitment to humanitarian causes.

Baba Amte’s educational journey commenced in Nagpur, where he pursued primary and secondary education. and Later, studying law in Wardha,and he discovered his calling for social service. His education laid the foundation for a future combining legal knowledge with a deep sense of empathy and responsibility toward society.

Baba Amte Lifestyle

In 1936, Baba Amte married Sadhanatai Guleshastri, and union that not only enriched his personal life but also became a cornerstone for his social work. Together, they embarked on a transformative journey, redefining compassion and service.

His notable achievements centered around an unwavering commitment to uplift marginalized sections. In 1949, he founded Anandwan, a leprosy rehabilitation center, offering medical treatment and vocational training for reintegration into society. Beyond leprosy, Baba Amte actively engaged in various social causes, playing a crucial role in the Narmada Bachao Andolan. His efforts earned him accolades, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1985 and the Templeton Prize in 1990.
