Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lakshadweep visit
sparks discussion, recent controversial remarks by Maldivian politicians have led to calls for a tourism boycott against the Maldives.
Zahid Rameez, affiliated with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), downplayed PM Modi’s Lakshadweep journey, suggesting India’s tourism couldn’t match the Maldives. Despite widespread criticism online, Rameez remains unapologetic. Similarly, Maldivian minister Mariyam Shiuna made critical comments about PM Modi but has since deleted her remarks.
Under President Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, the Maldivian government acted swiftly to address the situation. In a bid to ease tensions, they suspended three ministers, including Shiuna, Malsha, and Hassan Zihan. The government emphasized the importance of expressing views responsibly without harming international ties.
In response to these incidents, prominent Indian figures like Akshay Kumar and Sachin Tendulkar have encouraged citizens to reconsider visiting the Maldives and explore domestic tourism options instead.
